Studies conducted by neurologist, Barry Bittman, MD, and music therapist, Barry Bernstein MT-BC, (Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, January, 2001) indicated positive benefits from a specific format of drumming, relaxation and imagery. Natural killer cells were increased, and the level of cortisol in the blood was decreased after drumming following this format, thus boosting the immune system.

Bittman and colleagues (Advances in Mind/Body Medicine, Fall/Winter, 2003) also conducted a subsequent study which resulted in reduced symptoms of burnout and a more positive mood state after 6 weekly drumming sessions following a similar format of relaxation, drumming and guided imagery.

We ourselves are rhythm.  The beating of our heart, the pulse throbbing in our wrist or head, our circulation, the working of the whole mechanisms of our body is rhythmic.

                   - Hazrat Inayat Khan

One of the earliest sounds we hear is rhythmÉthe steady pulse of our motherÕs heartbeat.  Rhythm has been used for over 40,000 years as a means of communication.  It developed before speech and languageÉ speaking to a deeper, more innate part of our beings.

Did you know that group drumming can actually boost your immune system, reduce stress and burnout and increase your sense of connection and support from others?

Research has shown that a particular format of drumming can increase the natural killer cells, the cells that fight disease.  It can boost the immune system, reduce the symptoms of stress and burnout, and increase the production of endorphins, the bodyÕs natural opiates.

Drumming is a fun, expressive and invigorating experience.  It allows for interconnection with others, it allows one to work through stress and express oneself in a positive, focused way, and it allows one to feel reflected and supported by others.

You donÕt need to be a drummer to experience the positive effects of drumming. "Without the obstacle of a challenging learning curve, group drumming is an enjoyable, accessible and fulfilling activity from the start for young and old alike. From exercise, nurturing and social support, to intellectual stimulation, spirituality and stress reduction, group drumming stimulates creative expression that unites our minds, bodies and spirits!"  - Karl Bruhn, Father of the Music-Making and Wellness Movement,

Team-Building: Drumming is an excellent vehicle for self-expression, celebration, communication, and team-building!  Barriers break down as participants recognize that they can work together in unity in spite of apparent differences.  Differences actually work together in a harmonious way that makes for a much more beautiful and interesting outcome.

Spiritually transformative experiences can occur through the playing of the drum.  Using rhythms on the drum to entrain our bodies, we can bring about more balance and even reach states of deep bliss and joy.
