Music
brings an expansion into the soul, power and might into the spirit,
tenderness and warmth into the heart and light and freedom to the mind.
Ð Peter Deunov Music
Therapy is the
intentional and compassionate use of music to facilitate change and improve
quality of life. Music
therapy can benefit people of all ages, including individuals with stress, anxiety, grief,
personal growth goals, cancer, HIV, or other immune system diseases, mental health
needs, relationship issues, substance abuse problems, trauma, depression,
physical and developmental disabilities, and physical symptoms such as pain
and nausea. Music
therapy is holistic
in that it speaks to the healthy part of each individual. Through the modality of music, whether
it is in the playing, creating, or listening, one can access that part of
oneself that wants to be heard, that has been hidden, that has a story to
tell. Through
the expression of music, one can listen to the messages
of the emotions, the psyche, and the body itself. As music resonates within, one can often find validation
and expression of oneÕs own condition that surpasses that achieved through
verbal expression. Because music
is a powerful and non-threatening medium, unique outcomes are possible. Music
cuts through the logical mind that often gets in the way of accessing deeper parts of
the self. Through giving a voice
to these parts, one can access creative new ways of addressing issues, and
continue the journey towards wholeness. In the interaction with
a music therapist, the powerful
experience of being witnessed, supported and encouraged in oneÕs journey can
take place. What happens in a music
therapy session? Music
therapy encompasses a broad variety of techniques and approaches. These can include instrumental or
vocal improvisation, guided imagery and music (GIM), singing, voice-work,
songwriting, lyric analysis, relaxation and meditation to music, drumming,
chanting, toning, poetry and art to music. No
musical background is required to benefit from music therapy.
